JEALOUS!!
Looks like you had a great time. I’m over here studying for law school finals and you’re out wondering the great city of Firenze. I miss those days back in the day, when we would just pick a direction and start walking. . . “Quelli Erano Giorni!”
Have fun and remember us poor less-fortunate souls!
Buon’ Natale!

How could I not think about you when I’m there Don? You are all over that city for me…I think those people, 14 years younger, are still there, wandering. There are traces of us everywhere…sometimes I really believe I might bump into the two of us strolling down one of the cobbled streets. Memories’ ghosts. Love you.

Thank you Ruy! I still have NO idea what I’m really doing with a camera…but I think I have an eye for capturing unique images, even if I don’t know how to manipulate them yet. It was so wonderful to see both of you – I hope we get to do it again soon, perhaps in Florence, perhaps in another enchanting location!

I was just there for the weekend – but I have been there in total about 8 times, including staying for about 6 weeks at one point as a teenager. It was my “first love” in terms of cities. Also – I have tons of family in the Tuscany region – so the earth there feels so homey to me there. Are you originally from Florence or a transplant?

wakeandwander said this on December 13, 2011 at 7:24 pm |
I totally agree. Summertime overwhelms the city with tourists, sweat and noise…still beautiful and captivating, but the in the fall and winter you more clearly see the heart of the city, the pulse of it.

Fantastic photos! I long to travel to Italy – it’s very high on my list. That bike shot is awesome.
I recently went on a trip to southeast asia (http://calimike.wordpress.com). After that, I decided to create a website dedicated to artists and photographers. If you or any photographers or artists are interested in creating a beautiful website to showcase and sell your work (and get noticed).
It will be very easy for non-technical artists and photographers to create their own place (and in minutes not months). I’m letting a number of people in to try it out in the coming weeks.
Artists and Photographers check it out!

Why will you never go to Florence? It’s never too late! Do you live in NYC? I lived there for five years… I miss it so much! It’s sort of nice to know that the shop window I saw in Florence connected me to just a slice of Manhattan, like a hidden portal.

So glad to see this post FP! Can I ask some advice? I’ll be in Europe from 1 Oct till early december next year (providing there’s no 2012 apocolypse which will, needless to say, REALLY annoy me). I had a few friends warn me off Florence at that time of year on the premis that it’s a “summer city” and completely dead in the colder months. As someone who is actually there, is there much validity to this?
Jezzmindah said this on December 14, 2011 at 3:19 am |
Well…I guess it just depends what a person is looking for when they travel. I would say that there are many cities in Europe – primarily beach towns like for example Lagos in Portugal or Rimini in Italy that really empty out in the colder months, because many of the homes and businesses there are owned by people who only spend the summer there. Florence is nothing like that. There are a LOT less people in the fall and winter and for me that is a very good thing. In the summer I imagine the discos and bars are a lot more full – but full of other tourists. That’s fun too of course – but if what you are trying to get in your trip is a real flavor for the city, I think it’s actually much better to visit a popular tourist destination like Florence in the off-season. For example – the first time I visited Rome was in July and I hated it. The second time was in the middle of November and I was absolutely charmed by the city. It had a totally different character in the Fall. Tourist cities are often like actors in the summer, performing themselves. In the off-season they have the capacity to settle back into who they really are for a time, stop performing, and just be. Besides you’ll get better food, friendlier natives, and cheaper accommodation in the off-season. I definitely say go for it! Florence is beautiful all year round

cradle of the Renaissance, home of Dante, Michelangelo, and the Medici, Florence is unlike any other city in its extraordinary mingling of great art and literature, natural splendor, and remarkable history. Intimate and grand, learned and engaging, Michael Levey’s Florence renders the city in all of its madness and magnificence. thank you

Oh your photos are so amazing and make me miss Florence! You captured the city so well…the colors, reflections on the Arno, the food. Of course, the touristy places are wonderful and should be seen. But I love the underlying flavor of the city too. It’s been 9 years since I was there and I can’t wait to go back. Thanks for bringing back wonderful memories.

This is amazing and I adore the feeling it gave me. I miss Firenze, yet I have only been there once for a year over a decade ago now!
It’s so starkly contrasting from the Firenze of June that I remember, but oh so gorgeous. In an odd way, it evokes the same feelings in me that NYC does at this time of year.
I am brand new to WordPress, but I am going to add your blog & hope you will do the same with me. Be patient, as I am still figuring out where this blog is going & who it is ❤

They are all your photos, right? I don’t remember when was the last time I saw so many good photos in one place.
I first wanted to leave my feedback about each of them but they kept coming and coming as I scrolled down so now I feel just a huge energy/creativity boost and forgot almost all I wanted to say.
About the horse- what’s written above its food? Is it like – don’t touch, it bites? It’s funny. It’ written MORDE there and it means an animal’s face in Russian 😀
i love the way the bike stands out in the first photo. I definitely love the yellow spot the tree creates in the second one. I love the rhythm of the third one. The girl whose umbrella matches the wall behind her is really cool too.
In fact, I would love to send here a whole crowd of people and tell them – see, that’s what photography should look like.
Brilliant! Thanks for posting!

Souvenirs de Florence. Firenze is Beauty in some of its highest degrees. The beauty of this city is almost unbearable. The Stendhal syndrome, also known as hyperkulturemia (?) or Florence syndrome, is a psychosomatic disorder that causes rapid heartbeat, dizziness, fainting, confusion and even hallucinations when an individual is exposed to an experience of great personal significance, particularly viewing art, and particularly when exposed to the overwhelming beauties of Florence. So, friends, please beware of the beauty of Firenze.
